When shopping for a new quilt, many Australians actively seek products that are genuinely Australian made. Supporting local manufacturing, Australian jobs, and Australian-grown fibres has become increasingly important, but how can you tell whether a quilt is truly Australian made?
The answer is not always straightforward.
Many bedding products sold in Australia feature Australian branding, Australian-inspired marketing, or Australian business ownership, yet the quilt itself may be manufactured overseas using imported materials. It may contain Australian wool, but it is manufactured outside Australia.
If you're investing in a premium quilt, understanding where and how it is made can help you make an informed decision.
The term "Australian Made" has a specific meaning. In general, a product claiming to be Australian made should have undergone its last substantial transformation in Australia.
However, not all quilts marketed to Australians are manufactured entirely within Australia. Some may be imported as finished products, while others are assembled locally using imported fibres, fabrics, or fillings.
Kelly & Windsor is a vertical manufacturer. We source Australian merino wool from Kangaroo Island, and Australian alpaca fibre from farms. Our wool and fibre are processed in Australia, ensuring it's free from harmful chemicals. Australia has very strict processing rules. Only approximately 10% of wool and alpaca is processed in Australia.
This is why it's important to look beyond the label and ask questions about the entire manufacturing process.
When considering a quilt purchase, ask the following:
The most important question is where the quilt is actually made.
Many brands design and market their products in Australia but manufacture them overseas. A genuinely Australian-made quilt should be manufactured within Australia.
Natural fibres such as Australian alpaca and Australian Merino wool offer exceptional comfort, breathability and performance.
Understanding where the fibres are sourced provides greater transparency about the product you're purchasing.
Kelly & Windsor uses wool and alpaca from Australia, which are processed in Australia and then vertically manufactured into our bedding products in our factory.
Many bedding brands outsource manufacturing. Few companies maintain their own production facilities and control the manufacturing process from fibre selection through to finished product.
Knowing who makes your quilt can provide confidence in quality, craftsmanship and consistency.
We are the manufacturer of Kelly & Windsor bedding products.
A reputable Australian manufacturer should be able to clearly explain:
Transparency is often a strong indicator of authenticity.
Purchasing an Australian-made quilt offers several benefits.
Australian manufacturing has faced significant challenges over recent decades. Choosing locally made products helps support skilled jobs, regional communities and the future of Australian industry.
Australian manufacturers operate under strict quality standards and consumer protection requirements. This often results in better craftsmanship and more consistent product performance.
Products manufactured in Australia generally have shorter supply chains, greater traceability and stronger quality control.
When a quilt is manufactured locally, the people selling it often have direct knowledge of the materials, construction methods and performance characteristics.
At Kelly & Windsor, we believe customers deserve complete transparency.
For more than 25 years, we have specialised in manufacturing luxury natural fibre bedding in Australia.
Our quilts are produced in Victoria using carefully selected natural fibres including Australian alpaca and Kangaroo Island Merino wool.
Unlike many bedding brands, we are a genuine manufacturer, not simply a retailer or importer. We understand every stage of production because manufacturing is what we do.
