What Is A Tog Rating? A Guide to Buying the Perfect Quilt

Tog ratings to buy a quilt

Tog Rating for Quilts – Find the Perfect Quilt for Warmth

Shopping for a bed quilt, duvet, or doona can be tricky because warmth is often subjective. Using a Tog rating helps you make an informed choice. This European standard measures a quilt’s thermal resistance, making it easy to choose the perfect quilt for your climate, bedroom, and personal comfort.

What is a Tog Rating?

A Tog rating measures a quilt’s warmth under UK Standard 5335:1991. One Tog equals 0.1 m²K/W, meaning the higher the Tog rating, the warmer the quilt.

The word “tog” comes from the informal term for clothing, likely derived from the Roman word toga.

Why Tog Ratings Matter

Quilt Tog Rating Guide

Quilts are available in different Tog ratings, from lightweight summer quilts to extra-warm winter options.

Lightweight Quilts (Summer / Warm Climates) – Tog 2–3

Perfect for hot climates or sleepers who prefer a cooler bed:

Medium Weight Quilts (Spring / Autumn) – Tog 4–6

Ideal for mild weather and transitional seasons:

Heavier Weight Quilts (Winter) – Tog 7–9

For colder climates or cool bedrooms:

Extra Weight Quilts (Super Cold Winter) – Tog 10–13

Maximum warmth for very cold winters:

How to Choose the Right Quilt

While Tog ratings are a useful guide, consider these factors:

  1. Local climate – Are winters mild or very cold?

  2. Bedroom environment – Do you sleep in an air-conditioned or drafty room?

  3. Personal warmth preference – Do you feel cold at night or sleep hot?
