Reduce your reliance on energy this winter. Stay warm wrapped in a Kelly & Windsor natural fibre quilt.

Heating your bedroom overnight is expensive. A typical heater running for eight hours can cost between $3 and $6 a night — $20 to $40 a week, every week through winter. Most people accept that as the price of staying warm.

But the right quilt changes that calculation entirely.

A high-quality natural fibre quilt doesn't just keep you warm — it regulates your temperature through the night, responding to your body in ways a synthetic quilt simply cannot. Understanding why comes down to the fibre itself.

It starts with structure

Merino wool fibres have a natural crimp — a microscopic waviness built into every strand. When those fibres are brought together in a quilt, that crimp prevents them from lying flat and compressing. Instead, millions of tiny air pockets form between the fibres. Air is one of nature's finest insulators. Your body heats that trapped air, and the quilt holds it close to you all night — a natural thermal barrier that works without electricity.

The more crimped the fibre, the more air it traps, and the more effectively it insulates. This is why merino wool has been used for warmth for centuries, long before synthetic alternatives existed.

Alpaca takes it further

Alpaca fibre has its own structural advantage: the fibre itself is partially hollow. Where merino traps air between fibres, alpaca traps air inside each individual strand as well. Think of it like double-glazed glass — layers of trapped air reducing heat transfer and holding warmth close to your body.

The result is a quilt that is roughly 25% warmer than an equivalent merino wool product, at a lighter weight. Less bulk, more warmth — and for those who find heavy bedding uncomfortable, a meaningful difference in how well they sleep.

Why you don't overheat

This is the point that surprises most people. A natural fibre quilt doesn't just keep heat in — it responds when your body temperature rises.

Merino wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp, drawing it away from your skin and releasing it as vapour. This is what's known as hygroscopic behaviour, and it creates what scientists call a stable sleep microclimate — your body stays at a consistent, comfortable temperature through the night rather than cycling between too hot and too cold.

Synthetic fibres can't do this. Polyester traps heat without regulating it, which is why many people find themselves throwing off a synthetic quilt at 2am, then reaching for it again an hour later. That disrupted sleep — and the temptation to turn on the heater for consistent warmth — is often a problem of fibre, not thermostat.

The investment that pays for itself

A quality natural fibre quilt is a considered purchase. But measured against the cost of overnight heating — up to $40 a week through the colder months — it's one that pays for itself over a single winter, and continues to deliver for years beyond that. Our quilts are backed by a five-year guarantee, but customers tell us they last considerably longer.

Sleeping well and spending less aren't trade-offs. With the right quilt, they go hand in hand.
