澳洲约从30年前开始商业性引入羊驼，现在大约有175,000只注册羊驼，是除南美以外最大的羊驼养殖地。其他约有7500只在新西兰，5000只在北美，少于1000只在欧洲，这使得澳洲成为羊驼毛来源的一个重要国家。
如今澳洲被认为是出产世界顶级羊驼毛的重要来源地。实际上，澳洲甚至向秘鲁出口最顶级的羊驼毛。
目前澳洲大约有2500名养殖者。一只动物每年剪毛一次，可产出3-4公斤羊驼原毛。除了一些偏北的地区，羊驼几乎在澳洲全境可见。羊驼的寿命大约在15-20年，一只成年羊驼的肩膀高度可达一米，有优雅修长的颈部，浑身都长有浓密柔软的细毛。
