羊驼和它们的南美族亲
羊驼和它的近亲，美洲鸵，小羊驼和南美骆马都是属于骆驼科。

在古印加时代，羊驼被是视为太阳神Inti的礼物，因此羊驼毛也被叫做“上帝的纤维”，是被尊崇为皇家和贵族的象征。
早在16世纪初，西班牙人道南美寻找黄金。在他们的殖民侵略时期，他们给安第斯人和他们心爱的羊驼带来了巨大的影响。
西班牙的殖民侵略带来了战争，疾病和外来物种，主要是牛，羊和马。这些动物很快就占据了低处的优质草场，当地居民和羊驼不打不迁徙至安第斯山脉高处的平原上生活。在如此高海拔地区，极端的天气带来了刺骨的冬天和酷热的夏天，羊驼确在这种环境里生存的非常好。上图中的两只羊驼就被摄于高原环境，这也是他们目前主要的生活环境。
