About ten years ago, we received an unusual inquiry for a Flame Retardant quilt. After some investigation we discovered that the request for the quotation originated from the Australian Department of Defence Materiel for submariners sleeping quarters on the Royal Australian Navy's Collins Class submarines.
We applied for supplier registration and after a very rigorous assessment process, we were approved as an authorized supplier of high performance bedding products to the Department of Defence. We have since been audited and approved by the Department's Supplier Quality Audit Program which was quite an achievement for a very small specialty manufacturer.
In the following years we have proudly supplied a significant amount of highly technical bedding products, which were designed and manufactured by Kelly & Windsor in Australia. to meet international NATO specifications.
The RAN supply business brought Kelly & Windsor a number of unexpected benefits. In a highly specified supply conditions we upgraded our contract specification systems and manufacturing process controls. This created a stronger capability to serve our private label bedding business where consistency and repeatability are important. It also meant that we were required to obtain independent certification of the technical specifications and quality of the raw materials that we purchase.
We are now an established and approved supplier of military grade bedding products across all groups of vessels in the Royal Australian Navy, ie submarines, surface war vessels and supply ships themselves. We are now working to expand this experience and skill set to other similar applications such as the hazardous offshore oil & gas industry, state correctional facilities and possibly to allied foreign navies.
In 2016, Kelly & Windsor was awarded the bedding supply contract for the two new Landing Helicopter Deck (LDH) troop ships, HMAS Adelaide and HMAS Canberra which was the largest single supply RAN contract that we had undertaken up to that time. The diversity of products, timing and coordination of the LHD project was quite complex. The result was near perfect, and outstanding achievement for Kelly & Windsor and the Royal Australian Navy, fit for purpose, on time and on spec and Australian Made.

I noticed a Facebook post last weekend "who owns Kelly & Windsor Australia?" Is it really an Australian owned business?
We are a 100% owned Australian owned and operated business. The ownership of the company is on the pubic records and we extensively use the Australian made and Owned logo under a licence agreement with The Australia Made Campaign.
Despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic, we have maintained full manufacturing and shipping operations since the initial out break. We are actually struggling to met demand for our luxurious Australian Made bedding collections.
We have instigated strict Covid Safe Policies and Practices and are prepared to offer full support to staff who may be effected in these difficult times.
We were on TVSN with our Alpaca Gold 400 winter quilts and pillows with two shows in June which were both sold out.
These shows were the first time featuring our finest pure Alpaca Gold quilts and despite not being able to be in the studio in person, the shows were a great success with repeat orders required to fill customer back orders.
